About Author- and Reiki Master Kathleen O’Keefe-Kanavos:  Kathleen was born to a military family, raised in Europe, graduated from Munich International High School in Germany, has a degree in Special Education from Keene Teacher’s College in Keene, NH, taught Special Education for 10 years and Psychology at the University of South Florida.

Kathleen is a two time breast cancer survivor, www.survivingcancerland.com, an agented author represented by Scovil, Galen & Ghosh Literary Agency and has penned the soon to be published book – SURVIVING CANCERLAND: The Psychic Aspects of Healing.

Kathleen also learned about the healing energy of Reiki while going through her cancer treatments.  Kathleen eventually became a Reiki Master/Teacher as a result of her experience with cancer, healing and survival.

Anyway, here I am sitting in downtown San Luis Obispo watching all the shoppers amid the bright colors, blustery winds and leafless trees.

Then, out of nowhere a caroling quartet steps up and begins singing beautifully. It is almost like I am in the movies.

Remember that movie with what’s his name? You know, he thinks life would be better off without him? What is his name?

Hi All,

Well, the holidays are here for one and all to celebrate.  We recently celebrated Thanksgiving last month and now we have the Winter Solstice and Hanukkah on December 21, then Christmas Eve on December 24, and Christmas Day on the December 25, and then New Year’s Day on January 1, 2012.  Plenty of time and days to celebrate for one and all.  This is the perfect time to come together and be thankful for everyone and everything.  One does not have to be of a particular faith to join in on any one of these days of celebrations.

For me, these particular days always bring to mind the wonderful opportunity to practice Reiki for the health of my family and friends, home, garden, and pets.  These considerations do not have to all be mine personally, they can be for others.  There are many instances where I am asked to send Reiki energy to any and all of these particular things and events.  I do this for my clients as well as friends and family.  However, would it not be wonderful to have other members of one’s family or circle of friends that could also use the energy of Reiki for these purposes?

With the New Year only weeks away this is a great time to consider learning Reiki, to set a resolution to learn a new modality for better health and frame of mind.  My children are all grown now, but if I had had the opportunity to teach them Reiki I would have, and I would have introduced them to this at an early age where magic and wonderment were not second guesses.  I recall years ago when my son was only 5 or 6 years old and we would together go in the backyard, put our hands on the apple trees that were having difficulty yielding fruit and send “energy” to them.  This was well before I began the study of Reiki.

These particular trees had been severely and rudely pruned back, and their trunks were scored by the owner of the property we rented from.  Of course the owner was of the old school of thinking that one should “shock” the organism in to the behavior one felt was appropriate.  The same thing held true for livestock, the land, and one’s pets.  Often, if we cannot get what it is that we want then we push or shove until we receive the results that were wanted.  Our landlord was a complex man with deep but stunted emotions.  I say this because of the many anecdotes and firsthand experiences that I had with him.

Reiki is not a religion, and it is not satanism, voodoo, or any of the other negative connotations that are slung about when Reiki is mentioned or discussed.  Reiki is simply a wonderful healing tool for, and of one’s mind, body and spirit.  This is why having a Reiki Practitioner in the house, or close by is a terrific asset.  The holidays are sure to heighten anxiety, stress, anger, with drawl and many other assorted and inappropriate behavioral expressions when family and friends get together for holiday celebration.

Often, these celebrations and get togethers have massive amounts of alcohol and other drugs that are certain to exacerbate any already difficult celebratory agitations.  With the use of Reiki prior to and during such events this energy is sure to be calmed and restructured to where there is a chance for eventual resolution and even bypassed altogether.  I am not suggesting that Reiki is a cure all for family squabbles but it is certainly a tool just for such social environments as just one example of what Reiki is for, and can do.

Hi All,

Just a reminder for those of you who are Reiki Practitioners or simply interested in Reiki, I will have Frans Stiene on my radio show this Wednesday December 14, on “The Astrology Of Now With Reiki Rising” on Voice America and The 7th Wave Channel.  I will get to ask the Stiene’s about their organization in Western Australia named “The International House Of Reiki,” (founded in the late 90′s as “Reiki House“), the kind of Reiki they teach and practice, and what their general philosophy on Reiki is, as well as the books they have authored.

A side note for those who do not know what Reiki means:  Reiki literally means “spiritual energy”, “Rei” means “spiritual,” and “Ki” means “energy.”  And although Dr. Usui did not call his teachings by this name, the name “Reiki” is known the world over as we know it today.  What is now practiced as Reiki did not really become known by this name until it came over to the “West” in the 1930′s.

It is very interesting to me the diverse nature of Reiki practitioners and teachers.  Each group interprets Reiki in a different way, some that are of little difference from the original Usui Reiki which began as a healing society named “Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakki,” translated into English means “Usui Reiki Healing Society,” and some that are very different from the original Usui Reiki.  There are Reiki branches such as the “Usui Shiki Ryoho,” translated into English “Usui Way Healing Method,” or  ”Ususi/Tibetan Reiki,” and many others.

What is certainly common in all the different branches of Reiki is the desire for the healing of self and of others.  Reiki is a wonderful and relatively inexpensive path to walk whether with others or by yourself.  Frans and Bronwen Stiene have written a number of informative and interesting books on Reiki one of which is titled “The Reiki Sourcebook.”  This book pretty much has all the information that one would need to seek solid and truthful Reiki information, where to find teachers, organizations, websites, and a host of other great information.

Since there is comparatively little information of the once very secretive practice of Reiki, both Frans and Bronwen continue to provide new and evolving Reiki information.  Reiki was once kept under lock and key up until the late 70′s or early 80′s, and there continues to be new information and records about Dr. Mikao Usui released through a variety of sources, on how he presented and practiced Reiki in Japan where it originated in the 1920′s.  It is difficult even today to know just what was exactly used or practiced and why.  This is why I am so interested in Reiki, because the secrets are still being unearthed and verified by those who truly care to look.

Hi All,

How many times in life have you passed up something that you wish you hadn’t?  It happens to everyone,  all of the time.  Philosophically there are those who might say that things work out the way they are supposed to, so not to worry.  Then there are those (that’s me!) who feel there is opportunity for a second chance, just keep an open mind, and keep on trying.  I would like for all of you to give some thought to this please.  Just because you did not succeed the first time does not preclude you from trying again, and triumphantly so.
