Hi All,
I will be posting a blog series on the four Elements (Air, Water, Fire, and Earth) found in the Astrological chart over the next several weeks. Whether there is an imbalance of too little or too much of any one Element or combination thereof is a consideration for not only the Astrologer but the client or beginning student of Astrology. Imbalance of these Elements strongly suggest patterns of behaviors, and or physical and medical diagnosis in the individual. This can also be said of an imbalance(s) of the Modalities (Cardinal, Mutable, and Fixed) but this will be for a later time.
In Astrology the Fire Element consists of three signs, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, their ruling planets Mars, the Sun, and Jupiter. The houses that are ruled by these signs and planets are the first house (Aries), the fifth house (Leo), and the ninth house (Sagittarius). Although it is not all that likely that one will find the sequence of the natural progression of the Zodiac (i.e. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer etc) beginning at the first house ruler ships still apply, and should always be considered when delineating and synthesizing an Astrological chart.
The Fire element is an energy that is excitable, passionate, and committed in its expression. Carl Jung associated the Fire element with psychic energy, an energy that flows instinctively in an inspired and self motivating style. The Fire signs tend to be too impatient and forceful particularly with people who have a dominance of Water or Earth in their charts. The Fire signs are often the adventurers and explorers often providing new discoveries and ideas. Generally speaking Fire signs are more compatible with Air signs for these reasons.
Those that have too little emphasis in the Fire signs often lack fiery energy and thus have a weak digestive track. This can leave the individuals feeling sluggish and under motivated with a lack of trust in living their life. There is a lack of optimistic adventure and willingness to believe that all will work out for them. Too little Fire often suggests a lack in confidence, enthusiasm and a tendency towards depression. Exercise is a good antidote for those with too little Fire in their charts in conjunction with a good diet which will help the digestive tract.
Those with too much Fire in the chart often suggests an individual who “burns themselves out.” Often, the person with too much of the Fire element does not see this as a problem until it is too late. Too much Fire can be overly active, restless, and way too concerned about “making things happen.” If these individuals use drugs and or alcohol they will only fast forward the “burn out” syndrome at a considerably earlier age. Because these individuals are self centered and impulsive relationships often suffer as a result. There is no antidote for too much of the Fire element other than self awareness and helpful guidance from their peers.
If you are wondering what is considered “too much” or “too little” of the Fire element one needs to consider what the balance is with the other three elements. For instance, if there are five planets in Fire signs, two in Air signs, two in Water signs, and one in Earth then there is an imbalance of too much Fire. However, if you are paying attention you would have seen an imbalance with the Earth element (one), so there is an imbalance of Fire (too much) and Earth (too little).
