Hi All,
Some of you might say that the above title is obvious, that one’s imagination is not only necessary but vital to one’s survival. Well, if you did, I could not agree with you more. However, how many of us actually use the imagination? I mean we have so many other tools and instruments to do that for us. Television is probably the most readily used implement that we on planet Earth use. Then we have the Internet which is as wildly popular as television but just is not as available to many of the third world countries. Darn, there is a new frontier out there!
Think about it, how influenced are you when it comes to your diet (what and where you eat), wardrobe (sense of personal expression), physical conditioning (do you have your six pack yet?), educational (what college did you attend?), artistic/musical expression? There are so many other examples however these are seemingly some of the more important or pressing considerations of our time. Do you know what the latest trend is in fashion, automobiles, or music? Where did you hear about them? When was the last time you acted on your own personally distinctive idea?
It may seem simplistic, and actually it is, but due to the over stimulation of the media’s advertising blitz against us we do not seem to have an original thought of our own. But we do! We just are not using them due to our reluctance to stand apart from what our culture, our society dictates or feeds us. Could this be one of the major reasons we find ourselves so anxious thus requiring an anti-anxiety medication? Or perhaps this is the reason so many Americans cannot sleep through the night, or have the drive to exercise. It is all done for us in a virtual state! How many of you own a Wii, PlayStation, Nintendo? And the list goes on.
The imagination is no different an expression or experience than that of love, anger, attention and other cognitive attributes. What happens when we refuse to use or exercise these attributes? Well, we become overweight, anxious, depressed, angry, frightened. The thing is that we go to the movies to be frightened, or entertained in any of the previously mentioned emotions and then some. I cannot tell you how many times I encourage my clients to express themselves creatively, to use the imagination. For the most part it appears to be an alien concept for many of them. They are caught up in the rote experience of working, eating, coming home, and trying to get some sleep.
Well, if things are not working out for you try using your imagination. Whether it is to write, draw, paint, play, sing, or just do something that is your very own original thought will carry you a long way. I am not saying give up all your toys and what we perceive to be “entertainment” what I am saying is spend some time on your own, for yourself. Reconnect to the person that you are or were, find out if that person has changed, or if he/she has moved away, and then discover what is! My English teacher will not like me saying this but “you are IS!” You are imagination. The problem is that what you are experiencing in life is not of your own making. It belongs to someone else. Remember in the Wizard Of Oz, the man behind the “curtain?”
