The Saturn Return

Hello Everyone,

In the Astrological community it is often stated with a sense of gloom that the first Saturn return in a person’s chart is one to be most concerned about.  Personally, I can not and will not argue this point.  There is a great deal of anecdotal discussion as well as empirical evidence that shows this to be true.  This may be because the first Saturn Return falls around one’s 28th to 30th birthday (a complete Saturn orbit takes 29 1/2 years but varies depending upon the year and time one is born).  Any planetary “return” consists of returning to the sign, degree and position that it started at in one’s astrological chart.  Regardless, your first Saturn Return will herald in a new age of tension and responsibility.  Like it or not, this is a time that will demand your attention.

It is not difficult to understand why this is so.  At 28-30 years of age one generally has just recently begun a new career after graduating college, or maybe just gotten married and started a new family, purchased a home or new car.  This is what the planet Saturn strongly represents, responsibility, discipline, and the tensions that follow and involve these life events.  Of course not everyone is equipped or prepared to appreciate or understand the consequences and responsibilities that follow these action or events.  However, after living at home with mom and dad life on your own is not an especially easy one.  This is a time where failure generally takes precedence over success.

In times past Saturn represented Chronos, or ” father time” among other distinctions of patience and restraint.  In fact it was not that long ago when man’s time on this planet did not exceed the  complete orbit of Saturn (29 1/2 years).  Saturn has been called “The Great Teacher” or “The Great Disciplinarian”, as it indeed teaches us through trial and disappointment.  Saturn teaches us to temper our ambition until we have the proper life experience to make an educated decision.  This is why our highest elected official can not become President of the United States until he/she is at least the age of 35 years.  This is likely the reason why Indian War councils consisted of older and “wiser” warriors, rather than the young and impetuous.

Fortunately for modern man science has more than tripled our live expectancy from those earlier days, almost extending it to nearly four times the life span of our ancestors.  Saturn does not stop on its first revolution-al orbit in the chart, he comes back around at the ages of 58 to 60 (2nd return), and 86 to 88 (3rd return) years of age.  During these additional returns we have hopefully learned many valuable lessons represented by Saturn.  By the second Saturn Return one has hopefully acquired maturity, reliability, and become respectable and dependable.  It is through the representations of Saturn’s movements that we learn to become wise and patient, rather than expressing the uncompromising arrogance of youth.

Depending on where Saturn is in your chart the march of time will tell how discerning one has become over those periods and stages of life experience.  The house that Saturn resides in your chart strongly suggests how and when you will mature, learn, and become wise in your ways.  Like the other planets and the houses in your chart a story is being told of what and where, and of how and why you will experience your life here on earth.  Looking and waiting to see what opportunities await you by the measurement of time (Saturn) as we know it lends for the excitement and hope of life (Jupiter, Sagittarius).  It is in your astrological chart that offers you a peek into your future, as well as your past.

As with any teacher, or parent, we often bristle at the demands made of us as we mature and grow older.  It is not until we have been able to apply these learned lessons and strictures that we come to understand the wisdom associated with these life lessons.  Now, looking back, we are grateful for these teachings, regardless of the loss we have incurred along the way.  Whether it is that old athletic coach that made you run until you hated him/her, or the aunt/uncle that would not let you slide because you thought so much of yourself, you learned some valuable lessons about yourself through discipline and patience.  Without them, who would you be?
