Addictions and The Planet Neptune

Hi All,

I was recently talking to a colleague of mine about a natal 12th house Neptune placement in a chart I had been working on.  What is significant about this is twofold.  First, rarely I have found that any two Astrologers agree on the specifics of an astrological consideration.  Secondly, I revel in these types of discussions.  I have found that when discussing a particular astrological placement (0r anything else for that matter) there is so much more to it than I had initially realized.  Simply said, I find that the review of astrological self discovery and cognitive rationale exciting and stimulating.

Years ago I once read in an old Rosicrucian book that having a natal 12th house Neptune is akin to being in a five star hotel during the nine month period of the fetus’ development in the mother’s womb.  In having a 12th house Neptune the native (or chart owner) had such a wonderful and relaxing environment, that when it came time to be born into the harsh new world that they did not want to leave.  This explanation makes sense to me for a number of reasons, and although it may be empirically difficult to prove, every example I have relates directly to this thinking.

A 12th house Neptune often suggests a person that has difficulty with addictions.  This is not always the case, but more often than not I have found this to be true.  I had a client with a 12th house Neptune placement in their natal chart, and they excessively used and experimented with drugs.  The drugs did not have to be legal, nor did they have to be illegal, just something that would soothe the rough edges that we all encounter in this world.  This person flirted with multiple drug and alcohol addictions at any given time.  I do not like having to make the distinction between drugs and alcohol because alcohol is a drug, but you might be surprised by those that do not think this way.

After talking for some time, my client then related to me that upon becoming an adult they were told that mother took a lot of Valium during the pregnancy; “aunty” expressed relief after the delivery of a “normal” baby. My client told me how wonderful this medication made them feel, and how quickly they built up a tolerance to the drug.  The same thing with another client of mine.  A 12th house Neptune, only this time it was alcohol, and again, the tolerance to this drug was built up quite rapidly!  Of course it does not have to be a drug, but rather, something that trips the brain’s chemical balance towards a soothing and mellow experience.

The 12th house is often termed a “water house“, or “karmic house.”  The water houses are the fourth, eighth, and 12th houses, in the natural progression of the zodiac, and are ruled by water signs; the fourth house is Cancer, ruler Moon; the eighth house is Scorpio, ruler Pluto; and the 12th house is Pisces, ruler Neptune.  It is within these “water” houses that it is believed one can find the karma to past lives, for good or for bad. The fourth house suggests karma experience with the mother, and early home environment.  The eighth house suggests karma experience relating to money, and material possessions of our “partners.”

The subject of water houses is a much more detailed and complex discussion than what I have brought to you here in this blog, let alone the other houses of the astrological chart.  This is because of the need to include the signs placed on the house cusps of a chart, their rulers and where they are placed, and how they interact with one another if at all, etc.  Oh, and then you need to include the Triplicities, and Quadruplicities, also known as the “Modes” and “Elements“, then the Hemispheres, and much, much more.

Neptune and the other “generational” or “heavy” planets ( Uranus and Pluto), often find designations of being a helpful or “good” planet, or a difficult or “bad” planet.  This simply is not the case.  Focusing on a “heavy” or slower moving planet often has much detail about the individual, and suggests important aspects about the person. However, you do not want to simply state to another person that because they have natal Neptune in the 12th house that they are addicts.  This is not the way to go about discussing another person’s chart.

However, if you would like to have a consultation with a certified professional Astrologer look in your Yellow Pages or contact me, Curtis Williams; curtis@astrologyreiki.com,or call me at 805-234-7615!
